MS Office does now have the option to save in the odt format

Unfortunately, it now (as of Office 2007 SP2) claims the capability to read and write ODF files. However, the way they chose to implement this support was to choose, wherever the specification was at all incomplete, to follow totally different conventions in these areas than any of the other ODF-supporting applications. So this "support" actually causes much more harm than good, because the interoperability of such files is only with other MS Office users. And the formats used are not even compliant with their own "standard" they forced through the process a while back.
