Fonts are stored by the operating system, not OpenOffice.org, so you
will have to check your system for them.

2) when I go onto the openoffice website for downloading, it doesn't work,
telling me this page does not exist...
From some of the other mailing list I am on it seems there is a
temporary problem with the main download page. Using
http://openoffice.mirrorbrain.org/ as an alternate source seem to work.
