On one of my computers, an Eee PC 900 with Ubuntu 10.04, I can not save as a template by Shift+F11. Whenever I try, I get the following message (translated from Swedish, so I guess it's not exactly like the English original error message):
Error when the document <Document name> was written as a template: General error. General input/output error. I am not using the Ubuntu version of OpenOffice.org, I am using the official OpenOffice.org Calc 3.2. I haven't tried this with writer so I can't say whether this is a Calc specific problem or not. I have the same version installed on my other Ubuntu 10.04 laptop (a Packard Bell Easy Note something, bought in the end of 2006) but without that problem… Any suggestions what to do to debug this? When I try to create a new template this way, I end up with a 0 byte file at [/home/<user name>/.openoffice.org/3/user/template]. When I try to use the same name as an existing template, I end up with a 0 byte file called [<filename>1.ots] at the same place. If I do it again, the new file is called [<filename>2.ots] and so on. For example, if I already have a template called a.ots, when I try to replace it there will be a new 0 byte file at [/home/<user name>/.openoffice.org/3/user/template] called a1.ots and so on, instead of that the old file is just replaced with the new one.
