There are only two (rather ugly) options that occur to me...

First, create a character style from Default (call it 'Diacritics' or whatever), set only the font color, and set up a shortcut key for turning it on and off. This will change only the font color in whatever paragraph style you're using. But of course, it'll require hitting a shortcut key combo every time you want to type a vowel. Yuck.

Second, write a macro that goes through a document and changes the font color (could assign a character style as created above?) of all diacritics in the document.
