What you're describing is really most likely a problem with the "file association" for whatever file type(s) you are trying to open -- if OOo is actually the program that is trying to open the file, it has an extension that is not on the list known to OOo. And since there is never a mandatory update for OOo, maybe you got a bad version from some source other than the www.openoffice.org website. Another possibility is that the files were saved without the extension being added to the filename; if you are using Windows, the operating system relies on the extension to find the right program to use. In any case, the files themselves are almost certainly fine unless you are using a broken imitation of OOo.

First, try right-clicking on the icon for one of the files, select Open With, and browse to the program that should be able to open the file. You can also select the option to always use this program for this filetype, and then you should only have to do this once for each type of file. Alternatively, open the correct program and then browse to the file. Whenever you save from within OOo, make sure the option for automatically adding the file extension is checked. If there are existing files that have no extensions, but you know what it should be (e.g., .doc), you can rename the file with the correct extension and try again, but be sure you know what that extension should be -- things can get pretty messed up if you add the wrong one.

If you still have problems, please come back to the list and provide more information -- what operating system and version you are using, what version of OOo and where you got it, what type(s) of files are involved, and exactly how you are trying to open the files and what happens.
