The software named OpenOffice.org ("OOo") from www.openoffice.org is
completely free to download, to use and to distribute to others regardless
of context - business, personal, education etc.
Support is also free via the mail list [email protected] to which you
should subscribe (also free). There are also at least two web forums,
details of which you will find in the OpenOffice.org web pages. Support
comes from *users* of the software who volunteer time to help others.
The openoffice.org web pages also incorporate extensive documentation which
you are free to browse and/or download.
Beware. Under the terms of the OOo licence people are allowed to sell the
software. In many cases this is legitimate, for example some people sell the
software on CD at a nominal price as a convenience to those with incompetent
internet connections. However, there are some scammers around who require
non trivial amounts of money and registration and who then point their
customers at the volunteer support "group". Don't pay for OOo unless you
know what you are buying, for example onsite support or additional
functionality and from whom you are buying it.
When you install OOo you will be asked to register. This is purely optional
and is designed to try to keep track of the number of copies in use by
location. There are no passwords involved (the OOo web forums, as most such
forums, require passwords but that's a different story).
