As someone else pointed out, kword will open and convert PDF files.
I had numerous compatibility problems trying to use kword and didn't
have time to work my way through them. But, yeah, no linux version of
Solid PDF converter.

Is there a practical way to convert a PDF file into an
OpenOffice file?
If you have a Scanner, there might be 2 ways:
one scan into a word processor
two some scanner software takes in the PDF
Otherwise you might have to labourously copy and paste

There are numerous PDF to RTF/DOC converters. Most of the ones I
looked at are pretty poor. The one that works best for me is Solid
Converter PDF from solidpdf.com. There is a limited free trial
version. The full version costs only $50. It paid for itself the
first time I used it. 100+ page document with images, completely
converted and formatted (styled) in just a few hours total.
