And I am using OOo's 3.1.1, following all these directions, I still find two
problems:

1. the paper size is associated with the document instead of the output
device.
    Consequently, if you get a doc that says "A4" and print it on letter,
you lose
   several lines at the bottom of each page.  I guess the top of the page is
   formatted the way the author wants, but so what?

2. it doesn't work anyway.  The printer property "letter" only lasts for the
session.
   Next time I start OOo, the printer is back to A4 -- despite putting this:
     export LC_PRINTER=letter
   in the soffice start up script.
