The problem I see it that you got a POP_UP asking you to update/upgrade I have never seen a pop-up asking me to update OOo, so that may be the key to the problem. Where did you go to get the update? Could you have gotten some type of nasty thing on your system that caused the pop-up and did some nasty stuff? I would use an anti-virus on your system, then download the newest version from the web site of www.openoffice.org. User the control panel programs icon and un-install OOo and then restart your system. Then use your newly downloaded install file from OpenOffice.org web site to install the clean version.
