I will now uninstall OOo, delete some of the leftover folders, and see
if I can reinstall it as a working tool.

Update: I uninstalled OOo using the control panel. Then I ran
CCleaner, both in programs followed by registry. Then I reinstalled RC5.
Well, it is now marginally better. Launching OOo desktop shortcut
allows writer to launch normally. If I first launch calc, then FILE >
NEW > TEXT FILE then I still get the original crash.
My analysis suggests that RC5 is not yet ready for prime time.
