Thanks, Daniel, that's the explanation. I have a number (about 20) phrases in the foreign language, and I have, as you hypothesise, copied and pasted them from a list in another document. It was only at a much later stage of the editing process that I began to use paste special. That's the reason, I'm sure. //James
