I'm glad to say that you're perfectly right!
It does work: a very stupid error was preventing correct grasping of
values from the other ss: I was referring to 'Sheet1' whereas the name was
'A'..... ;-)
I'm now using the 'Reference to a cell in another ss' (i.e.
'file:///path/file.sxc'#Sheet_name.$Col$Row)
instead of the Insert/External data

No need for the workaround: it would meet the same error (as the case
was, when I attempted to do the same with other worksheets).
For a better understanding: I was doing exactly what I discovered is
explained in the under reported link you suggested (the c/c Summary).
