Try checking under Tools > Options, OpenOffice.org Writer, View -- make sure that in the Display options, "Graphics and objects" is selected. It generally is, by default, but having that off could cause this behavior. Does the graphic show up under File > Page preview (maybe after resizing the graphic container)?
