I agree with Mike; Force quit won't save anything, and kills off
processes regardless of what they're doing.
Ubuntu even gives an appropriate dire warning "If you choose to force an
application to exit, unsaved changes in any open documents in it might
get lost." (at least when using the 'force quit' applet, and I think
it's the same when closing a 'hung' window. 'kill -9' is less, ah,
cautious of course :-) ). I wasn't totally clear whether the OP was
saying this happened under linux, or whether linux was being pitched as
a 'better alternative' after the event.
Either way, the lesson is the same for all OSes - keep backup copies.
