Availability of this option is dependant on other options. In particular, it's disabled if you have "Regular expressions" selected. Click on More Options to display them; untick "Regular expressions" if it is ticked. Does that help?
I use the option often and this is the first time I've noticed this issue.
Note that the selection of "Regular expressions" sticks once you have selected it; perhaps you used it recently and have not unticked it.
