When I bought a new computer with Windows 7 OS several months ago, I transferred all my files from my old computer, which ran Windows XP. Initially, Open Office didn't appear in the list of programs, but I located the Open Office files and placed shortcuts on the Start menu and the desktop. It worked fine, except that, when opening Calc, a message usually popped up saying something about a Java environment being needed and that I should update Java, or something to that effect; but after clicking on that message screen, Calc would open, and worked just fine. Last week, I upgraded my browser to IE9 and later updated Java. Ever since, Open Office doesn't open. When I try to start it, the screen asking whether I want to register pops up, but, whichever option I check, once I click <OK>, that little circle showing that a program is loading appears for only about 2 seconds and then disappears, and nothing happens. First, I tried opening the program in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP2, to no avail. I then tried doing System Restore to the checkpoint before the Java update, but it didn't solve the problem either, so I undid that procedure. I have not tried restoring to a checkpoint before the browser upgrade. Of course, some automatic updates may have been downloaded and installed in the background, but I didn't make any other deliberate changes to my system. What do you think caused the problem and what can I do to fix it? Since I'm unable to open Open Office, I can't update it from inside the program. Should I go to the website and download the latest version, which is designed to work with Windows 7? If so, do in need to uninstall the old version first, or will the download automatically upgrade or replace the existing version? The version on my computer was probably originally downloaded onto my old laptop over a year ago; according the Readme, it appears to be version 3.2.
