What file format are you saving it in? By default, OpenOffice.org saves text documents in the ODT format. However, I haven't seen a job site that accepts that format. So, you'll have to ensure you're saving in a Microsoft Word format or plain text. There are some sites that will also accept PDF.
To save in Word format, just select it from the drop down list when you use "Save as".
