If this is not the proper forum, perhaps someone could point me to the
proper one, but I am trying to find out what is necessary to be done to
have a new language available for OOo.

You might have to download a so called "languagepack" for the
language you want and have to install it alongside your OOo version.

Once you have installed it, go to Tools -> Options -> Language
settings -> Language and choose there the default language you want.
You will have to close OOo completely (even the Quickstarter if you
use it) and restart OOo for the change to take effect.

Hope this helps.

After sending my email, I was afraid it would be construed that way. I
don't mean adding a language to my installation that OOo already
supports. I mean adding a language to those that OOo supports. I'm
specifically thinking of the Neapolitan language (I dislike using the
term dialect, but it is commonly referred to as an Italian dialect).

I would recommend the following:
http://contributing.openoffice.org/native-lang.html
It is the contribution page for those wishing to help with furthering
OOo and where you can get the list information for localized languages.
Good luck!

Something is amiss. Possibly due to the defection of Oracle...

At the link you provide I find a 'how to join' link which takes me to a site with this:

You can become a member of the l10n project by registering at the OpenOffice.org website the website.

But when I click on the link I get this message:

The page you were looking for doesn't exist.
You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved.

I get the same message when I click on the Membership link. Then I try the mailing list page which tells me:

The list where most of the communication takes place is [email protected]. At the beginning, it's probably enough if you join just this one. Subscribe by clicking on the Subscribe button under the mailing list name. You can also subscribe by sending an empty message to

There is no subscribe buttom, so I choose browse the archives and find that every message for the past two months contains the same text:

[l10n-dev] ***SPAM detected in Finance.gov.bd*** Returned mail: see transcript for details

So I have to ask the question: Is the native language development stalled?
