Many users access the ooo- Apache lists and especially the OpenOffice.org lists
using a service called GMANE. There are other services used as well. NNTP is
the protocol use for Network Newsgroup that was famous on the pre-Web Internet.
GMANE and other services allow newsgroup readers to access e-mail lists as if
they are Internet Newsgroups. There are special newsreaders that work with
that format, and some users love them.

That part might not matter to you, but it does matter to a number of
OpenOffice.org list subscribers. It is also the subject of this thread.

What matters to you as a regular OpenOffice.org list subscriber who receives
posts via e-mail (or by looking at the archive on the list web pages) is

 1. The ooo- lists are not offered on the OpenOffice.org list signups
 2. The ooo- lists require individual subscription via e-mail request for
e-mail subscribers. No one-stop shopping for adding subscriptions, removing
subscriptions, reviewing the archives, and even posting to the lists via a web
interface. That is, there is nothing like
<http://openoffice.org/projects/www/lists/>.
 3. The ooo- lists are separate and completely independent from the
OpenOffice.org lists that deal with the same topics and have similar names.

That's how it is at the moment. Does that answer any questions you might have
had?

Now, I didn't create the subject of this thread and I am not an user of GMANE.
I had no knowledge of it until folks on OpenOffice.org lists started
complaining about its not being tied into the ooo-users list at first. That
has been solved. That is what Larry reported.

So please be more civil. Try a cool dunk in Lake Ontario, or grab a cold
Genny, ok?

What the @#??%$# is a GMANE? and an NNTP ???
You are so immersed in your specialties that you forget the average user
may not have a clue...

Yeh, yeh, I'll Google them. But I shouldn't have to!
