Hello Jonas, I actually have used both, but there is little difference between the two. OpenOffice is free, and this software can do all of the same things that MS Office can. For instance, when writing a paper, you will need access to formatting such as: Left, Center, Justified; or using the Bold, Italic, and Underline features.
The other things this software (OOo) has is color fonts, along with the host of different fonts for your text. You can insert images, record audio, and create different features that will make your document look presentable. A few things missing from the program are specialized features such as (Reference/Bibliography inserts), or Hanging Indents, and other features that APA formatting requires. Otherwise, if you need a basic word processor, or presenter, database, etc. then (OOo) would be a good choice. OpenOffice also gives you the option to save your document in MS Office format, which is very beneficial whenever you need to send your information to someone else. I have done this several times, and opened the document in MS Office form, and all of my fonts, and features were left untouched. This is primarily what I looked for when I need a cheaper version of MS Office. Therefore, if your budget allows it, then get MS Office, but if not then OOo with do just fine. Good luck, and I hope this helps.
