I assume that you are using a MacOSX version. It is likely that MS Office changed your font configuration. What fonts do you have in ~/Library/Fonts Disabled/ and ~/Library/Fonts/ ? I suspect that you'll find a "Times New Roman" in your "Fonts Disabled" folder. If so then close all applications and then move that font from "Fonts Disabled" to "Fonts" and use OpenOffice.org to open your essay. Let us know if that works.
