In addition to the suggestions from Michael Adams (below):

It might be useful to run chkdsk and also see if the data on
the disk can be salvaged before deciding it is FUBARed.

The error case is puzzling.  can OpenOffice.org be opened without
clicking on any document?  Can any folders having the documents 
be copied to new folders without problems?  What operation creates
a lack-of-access-rights message?

This reminds me of the kind of thing that can happen when something
is created under one account (say as Administrator) and then accessed
from another.  Also, if a desktop had to be recreated, it may have
reconstituted the user account improperly.

Has there been a system crash lately?

Try using "Start - (All) Documents"[1], then seeing if you can open 
the folders with Explorer. If not then your hard disk is most likely 
corrupt and you will have to restore from your backup, once you have 
replaced the hard disk.

[1] The "All" only exists on some older versions of windows.
