Tools | Options | Expand Load/Save | select General

Near the bottom of the screen you can set the Always save as for the various 
document types.  We set up PCs to use the Microsoft Office 97/2000/XP format.

I'd like to make the "Save as" default to something the average person can 
read.  .odt doesn't cut it.
If MS Word can read .rtf, then that, otherwise, .doc. How do I do that?
