I do not know what investigations you did before you posted. So the check list. Items to check/think: [1] Did you format the partition on which Windows 98 is installed before installing it once again, or did you install it on the existing partition..?? In general, when you want to install, the OS , it is wise to install after formatting the same. I have seen similar problems , in my office, with our stenographers, and most of the time I used to notice the following problems. These are typical to Win98SE/98/Me (the last Pretty Lousy, I consider). [A] RAM is a problem . so application starts sloow. Minimum decent is 64MB. [B] Sometimes due to reasons I have not yet investigated, OO process seems to lock up. The guy starts once again thinking that he has not done it right. That too locks up. The way to come out of this , to kill all "OO" processes using task manager, and start once again, [or], reboot the machine. [C] Virus/worm infections are a common problem on Windows platforms, which degrade the files as time goes on. [D] The General thumb rule is to install afresh, after formatting the partition, thrice a year for heavy usage or atleast twice a year for normal use. This keeps the system on its toes. Also weekly defragmenting is necessary. In case you do not want to go through the pains of installing the OS, because your list of application software to install after installing the OS is too long , then you have to use a Disk Imaging software, to image the installation (after it is freshly done), which you can use to restore when needed. [F] Have you installed all the updates from Windows Update ..?? If not then do it. Also install the latest IE6 with Latest Service pack from the same site. [G] By the way, most normally forgotten issue; Does your windows partition have enough space on it ..?? Normally it is needed for SWAP file to grow. At least 500 MB free space is safe to have. In case you do not have it, then uninstall some applications and make some space on it. [2] If you un-install OO1.1.4, and after reboot, is your system running ok..?? Has it become slow..?? What about other applications..?? Note that after you un-install, also remove the complete installation directory in case it remains. [3] Do all of the applications in OO behave in the same way..??, or atleast one behaves properly..?? [4] Ok. Sometimes all of the above does not solve your problem. Then the last one is to find out which application/ running process is interfering with "OO". You will also need considerable patience for doing this investigation. Before you start this operation, it would be good , if you know what each running process stands for . For example Killing "Explorer" process will kill windows itself. So watch out. $First do a fresh reboot. $Then close all running applications, in the system tray, by right-clicking and choosing "close" from the menu that appears. $Open the task manager and kill those processes that you are confident of. This includes all antivirus, firewall etc. $Start OO Writer component and see the result. $Continue with this combination, until you at least find out which application is interfering with OO. Finally Remember, that Installing Windows after formatting that partition clean, and installing all Windows updates, with good enough space for the SWAP file to grow , constitutes a reasonably stable 98/98SE configuration. That is the key. Also it is NOT NECESSARY to install Windows on the Primary partition, viz., "C" drive. I will always install on another partition and keep the "C" Drive empty. This keeps many silly probles at bay, especially when you use a X-boot system, where X > 2. I have on any day, at least 4 OS's installed (Windows flavors +Linux flavors). I am only giving you an idea. Good luck.. :-) -- Best regards, Narayana mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
