Well, I have made great progress today. (No classes -- time to sit down
and puzzle some of this out.)

To review this issue, I have two computers, a Linux laptop (Ubuntu-64) and
a Windows 2000 desktop. Both print fine to my Laserjet 5SiMx (genuine
Adobe PS Level 2). The printer is on my home ethernet. On the Ubuntu
laptop I have OOo 1.1.3. On the Windows computer I have StarOffice 7.0,
patch 4.

All applications on the Ubuntu laptop print just fine to the printer, except
OOo. It won't print at all. I am sure the reason is because it insists on
creating its own printer interface and doesn't know what CUPS is. The
problem appears to be that it does not have the printer's IP address
correct, as nothing happens at the printer when I send it a file. I have tried
to fix this with spadmin, but spadmin loads and immediately crashes. The
only way to print from OOo on the Ubuntu laptop is to export as PDF and
then print from xpdf. However, when I do so, the characters appear correct
on screen in both OOo 1.1.3 and in xpdf, but various characters are
substituted at the printer, with disastrous results.

>From StarOffice 7.0 on the Windows computer I can print directly to the
printer. However, again, various characters are substituted for what appears
on screen. I can export as PDF and print with Adobe Reader, but
characters are still substituted, although usually fewer. Printing the PDF as
image makes no difference.

Since yesterday's panic at trying to get homework to print out, I have
discovered a way to print correctly, although it is a total PITA and only a
desperate stopgap. As I mentioned previously, I have various of these IPA
fonts. Some characters print wacky in one character and some print wacky
in another character. By using several fonts I can manage to get the whole
thing to print accurately. But what a pain!

However, this evening I finally had a breakthrough. I downloaded and
installed the latest beta of 2.0 on the Windows computer. And guess
what? Every single font is now printing perfectly! What I see on the screen
is what prints. Finally!

So now I need to install the latest beta of 2.0 on the Ubuntu laptop.
Unfortunately, this is a much bigger challenge. OOo does not make it
available as a .deb package -- only RPMs. I tried to convert them to .debs,
but alien puked them all up. In Synaptic there are three 2.0 beta files
listed, but all fail to install with an error message about missing files. I
have
searched everywhere, but cannot find a .deb package for the beta of 2.0.

Considering my results on the Windows computer, getting the beta of 2.0
installed on the laptop will probably resolve all my problems. So if anyone
knows where I can get a .deb package for the latest beta of 2.0, please let
me know. (And bear in mind, that the Ubuntu laptop is 64-bit kernel.)

Thanks to everyone for suggestions and help!
