Thanks, Dave

At the risk of imposing, may I ask three more questions?

1. Can I read my Star 5.something files (off my old computer) if I use OpenOffice?

Yes

2. When I create new documents, do I have to save them in some other format (.rtf for instance) in order to e-mail them?

You can send them in whatever format you like, as long as the recipient can read them. I would recommend .PDF format.

3. If I decide to download/use OpenOffice, should I make it my default? Are there any problems associated with that decision?

That is up to you. There are no "problems." The only difference is if you double click on file.doc it will open in OOo instead of MS Word of whatever else you had before.
