You can send them in whatever format you like, as long as the recipient
can read them. I would recommend .PDF format.

Are there any problems associated with that decision?
That is up to you. There are no "problems." The only difference is if
you double click on file.doc it will open in OOo instead of MS Word of
whatever else you had before.
