In parallel with Windows XP Pro have installed Fedora Core 1 with the
Open Office package that comes with it. I have defined a share
partition where I can, under Windows XP Pro, move Word data sets, and
then access them under Linux. I then open the data set in Linux under
Writer. Now the theory is that I should be able to work with Writer and
then move the result back to the share partition, reopening it under
Word. Now the point of the exercise is that I want to work under
OpenOffice writer, but my publisher wants the data set in Word Doc
format. So far under an actual test, what I have found is that the
formatting is not kept consistent when I open under Linux/Writer.
Moreover, when I save, I get a note if I want to use RTF or DOC that I
am possibly going to lose information if I do this. In practice, this
has been the case. There is a loss of formatting on the reconversion to
Word RTF or DOC. The long and short of this is: how much
interchangeability is achievable between Windows XP Pro/Word XP and
Fedora Core 1/OpenOffice Writer? Am I dreaming if I think I can swap
back and forth? Thanks very much. I'm new to your site: I don't want
my email address to appear publicly: I am registered as Waldo2.
The setup you mention is a good one, however, interchangeability is not
going to be 100%, ever, as long as MS keeps its file format a secret.
OOo has tried its best to figure it out, but we can't do it all. A big
problem is that even different flavor of MS Office can't read each
other. I had an issue where I had MS Word XP at my house and my work had
MS Word 2000, and I lost formatting going in between those two places.
I don't know what a good answer is. Some ideas:
1) (The preferred here on the list I would assume) Have you published
install OpenOffice.org. What does he have to lose. It is free and it
makes his clients happy.
2) Does he need to be able to edit the document? If not, send it in PDF
format.
3) Report the specific issue you are experiencing along with a test file
to issue zilla so that the programmers may be able to fix/adjust the
filter. The problem again, may be that if they fix the filter to work
with Word XP, it may not work with Word 2003.
The issue has nothing to do with (I would imagine) switching back and
forth between Windows and Linux. The problem would still exist if you
ran OOo on Windows.
I hope this helps. I am including some instructions on how to file an
issue in case you need them.
The best way to have problems such as this evaluated is to file an
issue. Issued are used to both report defects in the software and to
propose that new features be added. For instructions on how to file an
issue please see:

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is important that you file
the issue to ensure reproducibility with your examples.
Have a good one.
