Previously there was a provision, "Open Document" and when I clicked on
it I could then go to a Folder and open the old file. I cannot do so in

What is version 4 of the beta? The current beta release is 1.9.113
available from www.openoffice.org. You should be using this for us to
help you most efficiently.
As for opening a document, are you referring to the link from the quick
starter? That link was re-implemented in a later beta.
For mail merging, I don't think it has changed very much from 1.1.x.
