Thanks for all comments, and especially to CPHennessy
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> who was thoughtful enough to copy the above
message to me, noticing that I am not subscribed to the group.

I eventually solved my own problem. I had generated a document that I am
continuing to update and keeping in the OpenOffice format. I received a
request for a copy of the document (my resume, if you must know :-) ) in
MS-Word doc format. So I was trying to create a new file by "Save as..."
in Word format. But the dialog box didn't give me any way to choose a
format, which seemed to be the purpose of "Save as" as distinct from
"Save". Since the behavior seemed like "Save" I thought I might be
getting the wrong dialog box. But as described, "Save" doesn't need a
dialog since it is saving in the current form, and needs no info.

I continued to explore the menus for ways to configure things. I
eventually found the "Customize" and "Options" items at the bottom of
the "Tools" pop-up. I changed several likely things (so I can't tell
you which one actually was IT, or if it took a combination) and I can
now save into Word format.

Thanks again,
