[users] [moderated] How to number examples in linguistic text

I am a linguist and would like to write texts with numbered example sentence that look like the following sample (written in MSWord)



In Word I was able to 'trick' the system by inserting a caption with the opening bracket as text. So instead of "Table 1", my caption is "(1" followed by the closing bracket ")".

Can I do something similar in oo.org that meets the following requirements?
- The numbers should be on the same line as the first line of the example.
- The numbers (caption) is in a different font then the example.
- The numbers should be updated / updatable
- The numbers schould be quotable for cross-referencing
