Hi Gareth, OOo and StarOffice does indeed support StarOffice 5 formats. However (as someone else mention) SuSE's version of OOo does not have this "ancient" support. Please consider using the newer XML based file formats as some of the newer features in OOo may only be available for files saved in these formats.
