The number at the end is the build number. I guess you downloaded
1.9.118 so the folder is: /opt/openoffice.org1.9.118
like that. It is here that I got stuck. I am told tha the pkgchk
programe is deprecated and that I should use upkg or something like that.

That's not a problem it still finishes successfully.
Don't bother with these
# /opt/openoffice1.9.118/program/configimport --spool (you get success
msgs)
  # /opt/openoffice1.9.118/program/update-mime-data "openoffice1.9"
Have you edited the share/config/javavendors.xml file as per directions?

I did that and the pkgchk --shared worked without any error messages.

I tried to run the soffice.bin under the openoffice.org.../program/
directory, but either I am typing in the wrong command, or the computer
is not recognising it as a programme yet.

You really need to follow the instructions. You run
soffice and not soffice.bin
Granted... but if I followed all the instruction I would not have come as far as I came. Ubunut does not accept su - only sudo. Also my directory names were quite different from the one in the instructions .. but yes, I should have known there is a difference between soffice and soffice.bin

You can do it two ways.
cd into the /opt/openoffice.org1.9.118/program/ folder and then run (as
user not root)
./soffice
or from anywhere run
/opt/openoffice.org1.9.118/program/soffice
I've now tried both of these and I get the same response: "permission denied". I even tried it in the root terminal and I still get "permission denied)

I sense I am close to the solution here.

Thanks once again for your patience.
