There is a small article on this subject at:
http://psychology.wichita.edu/surl/usabilitynews/3W/fontSR.htm
There is a also some information, albeit for desktop publishing at:

Personally, I base my choices for a specific purpose on Web sites that I
like - I look around on the Web until I find something I like, then use
that, or a similar, combination.
By the way, in response to someone else's comment on your question, I
think it _is_ possible to have too many fonts - when I look at mine en
masse, I often go glassy-eyed and end up in a sweat of indecision - too
many to chose from! Good luck!

Hi,
Does anyone know of a site that lists good-looking font combinations? I
bought the MegaFont XXL font package, in the hopes that there would be
font combinations similar to the Bitstream Vera fonts in OOo (i.e. a
Serif, Sans Serif and Mono type for a given family). There isn't. I know
that combining fonts is an art and a skill, more than a science.
Does anyone know if there is a resource somewhere where I can get tips on
choosing good font combinations? The idea is that I'm writing some
documents to put on my Web site as PDFs and I want them to have a similar
look 'n feel. I want to stay away from Times Roman / Arial / Courier. I
like the Vera fonts but there is no Italics for the Serif version.
Thanks,
L
