I have no idea what these terms mean either, I just fiddled till
something worked! Like monkeys typing Shakespeare!

Try this:
1. Select the X-axis
2. On the Label Tab of the dialogue box, under Text Flow
select "Overlap". Make sure that "Break" is not selected.
This worked when I tried to replicate the problem stated.
