are files located on local hard drive ?
what memory & swap usage looks like when oo.org is open (run command 'free' in konsole) ?

I can understand slow startup, there's a lot of data structures, etc. to get initialized and a lot of stuff to load from disk, but I wouldn't think shutting down would take much work.
