The best way to prevent this from occurring is to turn
off Java in whatever browser you may be using. For IE go to:
Tools - Internet Options; click on the Security tab and then click on the
Custom Level button. From here, scroll down to the Java VM (or similarly
titled) heading and then select Disable Java. This will prevent Java from
being used within IE, period; not just malicious sites but all websites.

The machine, and for OOo, the Java functionality will be left intact.
Overall, though, Java is very useful, and I would recommend using it.
