Thank you for your reply. With help from grandchildren we solved it! This is a new computer and it had no Java runtime which stopped slides from opening properly. At least we think this is so but the programme now works but who knows!

Which version of OpenOffice.org are you currently using ?
It should not be necessary to download the pre-release of 2.0 to solve your
problem.
