[users] import addresses

I'd like to import addresses from MS Outlook to Thunderbird on my new laptop. 
Outlook is on an old disk drive, which I have now put in a USB enclosure so I 
can read it.  But when I go to 	Tools>Import and select Address Book>Outlook, I 
get and error message saying there is either no default mail prog (not true, 
since TB is) or the prog is unable to import??  Then it says to install MS 
Outlook and make it the default mail prog.

Help.
