Thank you for the comments and advice. It is now working properly

I tried with a simple one word "test.doc" made in MSWord97. Opening it from 
"File/Open/All File Types" gave the Read Error. With file type as MS document I 
could open it. Re-saving it from OO as a Word doc file, test2.doc, still gave 
the error 
with "File/Open/All File Types".

A setup/repair did not help.  Following your advice I did a complete uninstall, 
reboot, 
reinstall and this has now cleared the problem. I hope it is not something I 
will have 
to do regularly.
