In general they are compatible. There are some limitations, e.g. macros and 
not all Impress features work in Powerpoint and vice-versa. However for most 
things it should work. 
To send any files to people using MSOffice. just File -> Save As -> and in 
"File type" choose the relevant Microsoft proprietary format.
