John,

You need to provide more information:
1. What operating system do you use?
2. When you say record DVD's do you mean data and/or movies?
3. What do you mean by standard letters? Open Office has a very powerful
word processor already built in.
4. What are you looking for in the way of family trees? There are
commericlal programs available or you could create your own database with
the Open Office Base database to track your records. Its poossible someone
else has already done this.
