In 1.9.122, I just did. Try: Tools -> Customize Select the Toolbars tab, select the tool bar you wish to add word count to, Select an icon around where you want the "word count" tool, Select "Add", Select the category "Options", select the tool "word count", "add" it, close the Add box, Move the tool up or down the toolbar with the arrow buttons as you wish, close the "Customize" box, And enjoy.
It's a lot easier to do than to describe.
