Thanks for the link (and to everyone who tried to help). I wasn't able
to get to the machine in question today, but did test another laptop and
everything worked as expected. Word doc files opened with a
double-click, all was well.
So I suspect this may be something unique to that particular machine or
the OOo installation. I will just have to rebuild it and see what happens.
