I found an explanation for a question I asked earlier. Original Q is
followed by my own answer:

Subject: [users] Dialog for Saving Calc Files at "Close"
I am using OOo Calc 1.1.4. on WinXP.
If I save a file after having done some editing, the "save file" icon is
then grayed out, as is the pull-down menu FILE > SAVE. These stay grayed
out until I do something (edit, print) that OOo recognizes as a "change" to
the file. This is all expected behavior.
But if I save a file, and then immediately (without doing any other editing,
cursor movement, or any actions at all) try to close the file, a dialog
appears: "The file [name] has been modified. Do you want to save your
changes?"
This dialog appears even though the Save File icon is grayed out. At this
point, the program is behaving as if it does not know that I have already
saved the file. Is this normal? I would not expect to see this dialog
unless I had done some form of editing _after_ the last prior File Save.
[ This behavior is the same whether I close the file with the "X" in the
upper right corner, or use the pull down FILE > EXIT or FILE > CLOSE
menus ].
I don't think this is at all serious; just a minor quirk that I'm curious
about. I've looked at the TOOLS > OPTIONS choices, but don't see anything
that would cause or change this behavior.
Any thoughts?

8/27/05: I stumbled on the answer today -- the spreadsheet in question had a
macro that was assigned to the "Document Close" event. So, even though the
file had just been saved, when I executed "close file", the macro ran
(making some changes to the file, although not visible on the screen), and
Calc would then (again!) bring up the "Do you want to save your changes?"
dialog before actually closing the file.
