Oh, now I'm really embarrassed.  I have a web page (2 in fact) but
don't know how to upload a file. I installed gftp in order to learn, I
and know this is not the place to ask for instruction.  But I don't
think it's a bug -- I'm pretty sure it's something I'm doing wrong.
i'll just put up with it for now.
