It _can_ work. But how well it works depends upon:
i) Whether you re running OOo 1.1.x or OOo 2.0;
ii) What the data type in the fields are.  {OLE embeds are problematic.]

  My suggestion would be convert it to a MySQL or SQLite database for
them, and migrate everything to OOo.  [and Linux]
