I don't know whether this is the same as your problem or not, but I had an issue like this which turned out to be libgnomeprint. See: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89886 and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170753 for the details and a patch to resolve the issue. You'll have to recompile libgnomecups of course.
