David Teague began this thread as Linux help, but it also seemed to improve my own XP SP2 performance.

However, the memory setting (Writer Tools > Options > Memory) suggested in David's article still varies in actual operation (in ways which many of you will understand far better than do I), and the overall performance tends to deteriorate too rapidly (that is, available memory escapes). I suppose it has to do with the peculiarities of the Page File.

Someone suggested the freeware Memory Optimizer http://www.brentleimsoftware.com/ <http://www.brentleimsoftware.com/>and I am trying it. So far, on the current setting it seems to keep a fairly stable amount of memory available for opening both OOo Writer and the normal range of other programs. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this mundane little problem? Particularly, does anyone know if it is likely to lead to deeper problems later on?

Presently I have Writer memory set at:
............. Number of steps 10
............. Use for OpenOffice.org 128MB
............. Memory per object 1.0MB
............. Remove from memory after 30mm
............. Number of objects 10

But as I said, this stetting does not remain set for other operations. So I have set Memory Optimizer at something which I almost never use: "Automatic". [I don't like automatic lenses on cameras and I disbelieve all the automata which MS (and others too) push: Especially automatically scheduled downloads -- its so easy!]. However, I am trying MemOpt's Automatic Optimization button.

I set it to maintain the memory level at 75% of physical memory (512rimm).

There is also an option to engage Intelligent Optimization Technology (wow, big name), but for it, it seems more intelligent to be set at 64% (or 184MB). I am trying it now at 75%, however, to see if there are problems when forced into that range.

As I said earlier, the 128MB setting for memory (rec.in David's article) lowers the initial opening of Writer ( .125) to 17 seconds. While this advantage seemed to hold for OOo, there were times when other files opened extremely slowly -- worse than OOo ever had been doing. Now I am trying the Auto MemOpt method, which might help others wallowing in XP.

Still, I would like to know if anyone does know about these things. I have no idea where its going. Can anyone save me pain and trouble?
