Hi,
While experimenting with mail merge using a Calc spreadsheet as data
source,
I have realized that I do not know how to manage data sources in OOo
2.0.
The Help system claims that there is a many item Tools>Data sources
to open
de Data Source Administration dialog. Indeed, that menu item is by the
Bibliographic database menuitem in 1.1.x. However I cannot find it in
OOo2.0. I have tried to add a new data source in the
View>datasources pane,
but without success.
How are data sources managed in OOo2.0? Are they controlled through
Base
exclusively? In Base I have seen how to add a new database, but not
how to
use an existing spreadsheet.
Thanks in advance
Enrique
In 2.0, every data source corresponds to a "Base" file.
Am I to understand from this that now I'll have to create a new step
to create/register data sources, that of converting spreadsheets to
"Base" files? If I convert a Filemaker Pro export file to Calc, will
I then also need to convert to Base before I can use the data as a
source? Or is there any chance OO/Base will be able to open a
Filemaker Pro file directly, or it an FMP output (e.g. dBase, but I
don't know how good the Filemaker dBase export is...)? ODBC doesn't
work b/c as far as I can tell ODBC ignores FMP found sets and connects
to the entire database, but the found sets from Filemaker would be
very difficult to recreate as they are done across related files in FMP.
Or if I already have a method for converting FMP outputs to Calc
spreadsheets and using those for data sources, will I still be able to
use that approach without adding a second conversion from Calc to Base?
Carl
You can still register a data-source, but it corresponds to a Base file.
You can also use the URL of the Base file.
You can access an external database without creating a base document or
a registered data source if you use a macro. I have connected to a MySQL
database, Paradox ODBC source, flat files, DBF files, and a few others,
without using a data-source or a Base document.
