Not sure you missed anything as I am not sure you can do this. However I will suggest that employing Cross-references might do the trick. You can read about these in http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/word_processing/How_to_Write_a_Thesis_in_OOo.pdf , the user guides and Help.
